ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) -- Ron English accepted Louisville's offer to be its defensive coordinator, the same job he had at Michigan, where incoming coach Rich Rodriguez fired all of Lloyd Carr's assistants.

"I called them last night and said I'd take the job," English told The Associated Press on Tuesday, the day the Wolverines beat Florida 41-35 in the Capital One Bowl. "I've appreciated my time at the University of Michigan, particularly the opportunity to work with coach Lloyd Carr, a man I love."

Atlanta Falcons' head coach Bobby Petrino announced late yesterday that he was resigning to become head coach at Arkansas. Mr. Loyal he's not.

Last November 2006, Petrino made this statement after signing a new contract with the University of Louisville:

"When (Louisville AD) Tom (Jurich) and I sat down this summer to talk about a new contract, we anticipated that there would be many high-profile job openings," Petrino said in the statement. "The University of Louisville made a tremendous commitment tome, and I made a commitment to the University of Louisville. I’m not a candidate for any job openings."

Jeff Brohm was named offensive coordinator, replacing Charlie Stubbs. Brohm served as assistant head coach, quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator this past season. Stubbs resigned to pursue other opportunities, Kragthorpe said.
Kragthorpe also announced that defensive coordinator Mike Cassity will not be retained next season.

And as expected, the Cards will NOT go bowling this season...

WVU won 38-31.

Both Smith and head coach Kragthorpe are denying that it happened.

This is troublesome. As a life-long fan of everything UofL, I'm totally embarrassed and ashamed.

Why would Pat White make up something like that?

Preston, if you did spit in Mr. White's face I encourage you to be a man and admit your guilt and apologize.

Question: After reviewing the film from the Utah game, what jumped out at you?

AnswerWe gave up too many plays on defense. We gave up 22 plays of 10 yards or more. And obviously we gave up 580- something yards, so we did not play well on defense at all, like I said at the postgame press conference

Q: There seemed to be improvements defensively at NC State. Was there regression against Utah, or did we make too much of those improvements?

A: We didn’t play well on defense the other night at all. We had played a little bit better against N.C. State, but against Utah we did not play well at all.

According to Brian Bennett of the Courier-Journal James McKinney has transferred from Michigan to the University of Louisville. Good news for the home team! The 6-foot-2, 281-pound defensive lineman was one of the most highly recruited players in the state during his senior year at Central in 2004.

He'll have to sit out a year and then will have three remaining years to play for the Cardinals.

The court will appropriately be named: Denny Crum Court. Coach Crum had this to say:

"You can't spend 30 years at a place and not grow to love it or you'd have been gone long before," Crum said. "The fact that I loved it here and they seemed to want me here and it just seemed to go on for a long time (is special). It's not a common thing in this business for coaches to stay at one place. There's only a few of us who get a chance to do that."

Early Bird Gets The Ticket

Early bird gets the worm...er, ticket. Per Jody Demling, Courier-Journal columnist:

I arrived at the check-in at 6 o'clock (AM) and was still doing great because I was second in line. This was going to be a breeze until I turned the corner and saw probably - and I am not kidding - 2,000 people in front of me waiting to get through security.

The line was all the way back to the escalators, down the hallway (like you were going to the really old terminal) at the airport, back up the hallway and almost out the front door. Several folks told me it was even worse at 5 a.m. I also heard from several other media members who had later flights that said it wasn't that bad but was still a good wait!

I finally took my shoes off at 7:07 a.m. and I arrived at the gate at 7:13 - two minutes before my flight was scheduled to leave. It was a good thing half the other passengers were still behind me in the line. We left about 35 minutes late.

I'll I can say is...Go Cards! You travel well!

That percentage is currently the 3rd best in the NCAA for place-kickers who have attempted at least 10 field goals. Carmody has hit 16-of-17 in field goals this season with a long of 51-yards.

The Buckeyes are unanimous No. 1 in the coaches' poll, nearly so in the Harris, clearly No. 1 in the BCS with all but one victory by at least 17 points, and that includes at No 3 Texas and at Iowa. A win against Michigan no matter the margin sends them to Glendale, and a loss might only drop them to second.

•Worst case: A blowout loss at home to Michigan coupled with Louisville finishing unbeaten. Or an upset of historic proportions this week at Northwestern.

•Remaining games: At Northwestern (3-7); No. 2 Michigan (10-0).

No. 2 MICHIGAN (10-0)

•Best case: Win two more and play for it all. The Wolverines have been pressed by opponents in recent games, but the computers love them (they're first in that component this week).

•Worst case: A Ball State hangover leads to a stunning loss at Indiana.

•Remaining games: At Indiana (5-5); at No. 1 Ohio State (10-0).

No. 3 LOUISVILLE (8-0)

•Best case: Run the table, impress the voters and the computers, finish in the top two and head for the desert.

•Worst case: Lose more than one game and miss a BCS bowl altogether. That might not hurt as much as finishing unbeaten and then watching two other teams (one with a loss) play for the title.

Before I Get Old - So Johnny, is Steve Slaton possibly the fastest/strongest tailback in college football today? He's averaging over 150 yards per game. I watched the WVU vs Maryland game and he had nearly 100 yards in the first quarter!

Johnny - He's very fast! I don't know about the strongest, but he is up there. Slaton gets where he needs to be in a hurry. West Virginia's offense is built
on out-numbering the opponent at the point of attack, and Steve is very good at
making people miss and setting up his blockers. He's probably the ideal runner
for this style of offense because he's on you right now, and forces you to make
a move.

BIGO - Speaking of rushing, QB Pat White has done a good job this season
himself. He is averaging 88.4 yards per game. I believe UofL will focus on those two. If that's the case, who will step up to the plate?

Johnny - We haven't really seen him break a big one this year, but Owen Schmitt is a very capable runner. He has just enough shiftyness to exploit a crack in the defense, and he's 6'3 250. He's not the athlete that Brian Leonard is at
Rutgers, but he makes up for it with his power.

Brandon Myles, Rashawn Bolden, Tito Gonzalez, Wes Lyons (6'8) have shown
glimpses, but we have thrown the ball so sparingly this year that I don't think
any of them has carried the team this year.

BIGO - QB Pat White passing effesionsy is approximately 69 percent (68.8% to be exact). Do you expect him to continue this trend against Louisville?

Johnny - He's going to have to!!! I nearly lost my voice against UConn,
screaming "throw a play-action pass!!!" It was open all game long, just like
against every team we've played against this year that wanted to crowd the
line. With the three and four receiver sets and the defense sending a safety on
every play, someone is going to be open.

It's going to take a complete game from the offense to have a chance to win.

BIGO - Tell us more about Darius Reynaud.

Johnny - He's the most dangerous player on the team "in space". He catches the ball well, and he's always good for a reverse or two every game. I don't have
any stats to back me up, but I would think he is way up there in yards after
the catch in the nation. His bread and butter is the bubble screen.

BIGO - It's been widely publisized that UofL officials will NOT allow
the 'Pride Of West Virginia' band on the field at half-time. How much of a motivation is that to the players; if at all?

Johnny - Probably not much. Everyone is looking for anything to talk about in
the papers. I would like it if more bands made the trip on away games in the
Big East. I think it's something that is sadly lacking in the conference.

I'm glad the band is going to make the trip to the game anyway. They are coming
to my town on the way back through to perform at a high school game that
Friday. I'm housing a couple members of the band, which is kind of an honor for
me. I never miss their pre-game performance, so it's nice to be able to help
out when I get the chance.

BIGO - Any significant injuries to report?

Johnny - Ridwan Malik, a safety has had injury problems all year long. He's
backed up by my favorite name on the team, Sophomore safety John Holmes. Holmes
is 6'1 230, which is a nice size for a safety in this defense considering we
play with five defensive backs. Pat Leibig and Johnny Dingle are two defensive
linemen that had some ankle trouble before the UConn game, but should be fine
by the 2nd. We've been real lucky in that respect. Injuries have been at a
minimum this year.

BIGO - And lastly, your prediction for the game?

Johnny - I would think we are in for a shootout. In a game with a lot of big
plays, it might just come down to who has the ball last (that's an original
answer isn't it?). I'm going to be a total homer and say that the final will be
WVU 42 Louisville 41.

Last week I wrote that the Miami game (UL 31 UM 7) was THE biggest game this year. I was wrong...I admit it. The game against WVU just got a whole lot more interesting since the USC loss to Oregon State.

And of course #1 Ohio State is set to play #2 Michigan November 18th. One of them has to lose of course.

So, and I'm just thinking out loud here, if Louisville can beat WVU and Michigan loses to Ohio State then...???

And...Texas just squeaked by Texas Tech 35-31. Texas still has to play Oklahoma State, Kansas State and Texas A&M.

Mr Drury,

I personally apologize for the very un-southern like hospitality shown to you and the 'The Pride' by the University of Louisville.

As a Louisville native and life-long fan of all things Louisville - this one debacle bums my burgoo.

I believe there is strong pressure on AD Tom Jurich to change his mind about the half-time events... he SHOULD do the right thing.

Let the band play!

Again, my apologies to you and all WVU fans... this is not how we should treat a fellow Big East member.

Louisville sports writter Billy Reed nails the 'Pride Of West Virginia' debacle on the head.

...U of L reneged. Never mind that West Virginia already had made travel plans. The Cardinal band will use its 3 1/2 minutes. But Tom Jurich’s minions told West Virginia that its 3 1/2 minutes was now needed for special presentations and standing promotions.

The selling of Cardinal athletics has reached the point of disgraceful and it’s about time somebody addressed the issue. The mens’ basketball program generates more revenue than any other in the nation — and will make even more when the new arena is opened. Every bit of time and space has been sold, except for Rick Pitino’s forehead. No pro franchise is more commercial than U of L.

When Jurich relents, as public opinion will force him to do, he will welcome the West Virginia band. The only question is whether how he will appease the donors and boosters who were expecting to get what they paid for — a moment in the sun that’s now U of L football.

About the "Pride of West Virginia" band thingy...

From the Charleston Daily Mail (Oct. 25th):

"After much deliberation, on Oct. 18 the decision was made to limit the University of Louisville's band performance to three-and-a-half minutes," Jay Drury (WVU band director) said he was told by Louisville officials. "For the same reason, no time was left remaining to feature the WVU band on the field."

"Needless to say, we were shocked," Drury said. "As of now, both our athletic department and members of their athletic department have been in conversations throughout the day to try and resolve the situation."

To be honest we can't even remember ever seeing an opposing team's marching band playing on the field at any time during a home game. Not saying it hasn't happened, just saying we're usually more focused on eating, getting other people's thoughts on the action, or urinating.
